Diastolic Pressure

The blood pressure measured during diastole—the phase when the heart is relaxed and filling with blood.

Digestive System

Body system that breaks down food into nutrients for body cells and eliminates remaining waste.

Dilate

To enlarge or widen.

Diploid Cell

A cell that has two sets of chromosomes (in humans, one set of twenty-three chromosomes from each parent, or forty-six total).

Directional Term

A term used to explain the relation of one or more body parts.

Discectomy

Surgical removal of part or all of an intervertebral disc that is pressing on a nerve.

Disease

A condition that affects the normal functioning of the body; in some cases known as a disorder.

Distal

A directional term referring to a position farther from the origin of a body part or point of attachment.

Diuretic

A substance that encourages urine production.

Doppler Flow Study

An ultrasound test that measures blood flow through vessels.
